Shoothill Produces Deep Moon

One Small Step for Shoothill, One Giant Leap for Deep Zoom

Shoothill continues to push the limits of Microsoft Deep Zoom with "Deep Moon" - the largest Deep Zoom in the World

London, United Kingdom, (July 20th 2009) To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo missions to the moon and to commemorate this amazing achievement Shoothill has created "Deep Moon" to see this please go to www.shoothill.com/deepmoon.

To showcase their unrivalled expertise in this emerging technology, Shoothill, the Bing Maps and Silverlight data visualisation specialists, have today released a new Microsoft Silverlight Deep Zoom Image celebrating the anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 lunar landing. Called "DEEP MOON", the image is 10Gigabytes and is made up of over 60,000 Apollo composite pictures and with this development Shoothill can now increase the maximum potential data content of a Deep Zoom mosaic by a significant magnitude.

Rod Plummer, MD of Shoothill explained: "Microsoft Deep Zoom is still in beta right now and there are some limitations particularly in terms of total size of image and the sheer volume of information that needs to be processed and this creates both time problems and ultimately restricts what organisations are able to do. What this means in practical terms is that all Deep Zooms so far produced around the world have a limit of around 10,000 x 10,000 pixels".

"For the past 18 months, Shoothill has been working on software code to allow us to push the boundaries of Deep Zoom even further in order to show to the world what Deep Zoom (and Shoothill) is capable of. The Apollo image is truly gargantuan in size and we believe that this level of quality (of both the master image and the clarity of the individual cells) represents the current limit of Deep Zoom and this opens up many possibilities for information storage and retrieval using Deep Zoom and for end users, the result is simply the biggest Deep Zoom in the World.

Although the processing requirements for the composition of such Deep Zooms increases significantly as the component data becomes more comprehensive, Shoothill's engineers have also created code to increase the speed at which this processing can be performed so in effect, the extra data being handled is accounted for by more efficient software processes.
