Train company realises immediate improvement in maintenance for better service while reducing costs

Derby, United Kingdom, (May 19th 2009) - Bombardier Transportation, the leading global transportation company operating in 60 countries, has transformed its train management systems by implementing a Microsoft Virtual Earth-based mapping solution.

The system has been developed by Shrewsbury-based Shoothill, one of the UK’s premier developers on the Virtual Earth platform, and has revolutionised the way in which Bombardier Transportation engineers can analyse train engineering information via a Virtual Earth based map. With a clear view of train assets, events and environmental attributes, Bombardier engineers can easily monitor performance and plan maintenance all within the map console. In addition, Bombardier executives have a concise overview of operations and can make more informed strategic decisions and gain a deeper visual insight into their business, helping them analyse data far easier than before, leading to more efficient maintenance and services.

Dr Michael Provost, Head of Predictive Services Engineering at Bombardier Transportation said: “With the Virtual Earth solution built by Shoothill, we can see exactly what we need and when we need it. The system is very popular with our engineers, helping them diagnose and solve engineering problems quickly and some of the other benefits already realised include better train monitoring, faster maintenance analysis and enhanced business operations .It helps us to reduce our operating costs and increase passenger safety.”

Vikas Arora, Virtual Earth Solutions Specialist, Microsoft UK, commented: “Microsoft’s Virtual Earth platform is ideally suited to the needs of organisations such as Bombardier Transportation, whose widespread operations span multiple countries and require constant monitoring from central locations. We are extremely pleased that the implementation of Virtual Earth has allowed Bombardier Transportation to streamline its operations, optimise efficiency and boost productivity throughout its train network.”

Rod Plummer Managing Director of Shoothill, added: “We are delighted with the end result at Bombardier and this solution is a great example of the many uses that Virtual Earth coupled with our expertise can be used to achieve.”
