“Being prepared is vital to help reduce the risk of flooding. With over five million people living or working in areas at risk from flooding across England and Wales, we are urging communities to use the new application, alongside the Environment Agency’s existing Floodline telephone service and website updates, to keep one step ahead of future floods.”
Originally launched as a Facebook App, the award-winning FloodAlerts application was opened up to all web users in response to the unseasonal amounts of rain seen across the UK in 2012.
FloodAlerts is the first graphical representation of the flood warning data which provides localised updates every 15 minutes (24/7), keeping users informed about the potential flood risks in their area.
The application developed by Shoothill is free to use and has been licensed by the Environment Agency to provide users in England & Wales with flood warnings.
When a flood alert is issued by the Environment Agency that affects a users’ monitored location, they will receive a notification. This alert will give users a direct link to the relevant flood warning(s) on the map, giving them a chance to assess the situation as it develops.
Since the launch of the FloodAlerts Application on Facebook, in April 2012, Shoothill has expanded the reach of the product and FloodAlerts in now accessible to all users across many platforms, from PC/MAC through to the most popular mobile devices running Android, iOS, Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8.
Constantly taking advantage of the latest technologies, Shoothill developed the FloodAlerts application in time for the launch of the Windows 8 platform in October 2012. The application incorporated the @FloodAlerts Twitter feed and a new Photo Gallery where users can upload their own images. To install FloodAlerts on Windows 8, simply visit the Windows App Store.
“This is a fantastic example of the private sector involvement in this important area and shows powerfully how social media tools can be exploited and utilised for wider, real world benefits.”
